Alignment with NEP 2020
Earlier in September, Delhi’s Secretary (Education) Ashok Kumar wrote to the Centre, expressing his desire to sign the PM-SHRI MoU. Mr. Kumar had also requested that the Samagra Shiksha funds be released in three and four installments for fiscal years 2023-24, as well as the first installment for fiscal years 2024-25. The pending funds total ₹330 crore.
In summary, the PM-SHRI scheme aims to improve and modernize Indian schools. It will give students a high-quality education, improve learning environments, and help them develop important life skills. PM-SHRI schools will set a new standard in Indian education by emphasizing technology, teacher training, and sustainability.
West Bengal has opposed adding the PM-SHRI prefix to their school names because the state bears 40% of the cost. In September, state government officials reported that West Bengal was still waiting for approximately ₹1,000 crore in Samagra Shiksha funds. Punjab and Delhi signed on in August and October, respectively. Officials at the MoE confirmed that Tamil Nadu and Kerala are expected to sign the MoU soon.
Punjab received the first instalment of Samagra Shiksha funds for 2024-25, totaling ₹177 crore, just days after joining the PM-SHRI scheme implementation process.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin wrote a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, citing a delay in the release of funds. While Tamil Nadu has a two-language policy, NEP suggests a three-language policy, which Mr. Stalin has rejected. Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan emphasized the importance of involving Tamil Nadu in the implementation of the National Education Policy.
